My First Download Of The Edge Financial Daily

I was a regular at The Edge Markets (previously The Edge Daily) some 15 years ago. So much so that when I was forced to register as a user at that time, an offer was made to me for downloading e-copies of their daily newspaper, The Edge Financial Daily. I don't have the bandwidth then as I was on dial-up and so, I did anything. I just toss the link into the bin. Besides, all the financial information that I needed was readily available in the local Malaysian daily English newspapers then, The Star in my case.

Fast forward to February 1st, 2020. On this very day, The Star decided to do away with the closing stock prices of Bursa Malaysia, the foreign exchange rates and closing commodity prices. Gone too are the dividend payout rates and dates, and the bonus/rights issue announcements that were regularly published every Monday. All that they have now are just news articles in the business section, no numbers.

In case if you are wondering, yes I do have some money invested in the local Malaysian stock market. Checking on the closing stock prices of my investments is something I do every market trading day in the mornings. And I don't think I am the only one.

Although it is true that I could view this information online, I do also look at the stocks financial ratios like the PE and dividend yields. These ratios however are buried in some number of clicks away online. What I want is a quick comprehensive cross reference list that I could look at in glance of all stocks and not go hunting for them one by one.

So what am I to do?

Back I went to The Edge Markets website looking for information about the downloadable The Edge Financial Daily that I mentioned above. It took me some time but I found it in the end. I subsequently re-registered as I couldn't find the options page.

Two days later, the downloadable link came via my email inbox. Without much trouble, I have since successfully downloaded my first copy this morning - a 5.2 MB PDF file. And the best part - it is still absolutely FREE. Kudos to The Edge Financial Daily (register link here).

And yes, the financial information that I was looking for, they are all there in The Edge Financial Daily. Also, more business news too - 33 pages in all compared to The Stars business section of just 8 pages nowadays on weekdays. It used to be more a couple of years ago. Looks like The Star is shrinking. Makes me wonder if I ought to renew my subscription for next year. The cost is going to be about RM 500 from what I could gather.

Now, RM500 - that is about the selling price of a Samsung Galaxy Tab A tablet in the online market, isn't it. An Android powered tablet - that's something that I could use to read my e-newspaper in absolute comfort while laying back on my lazy chair or even in my bed.

Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post. Nobody paid me, least of all from the people at The Edge Markets. I just want my financial numbers, that's all.

Update 29th February 2020

Everything is back to as it was in the business section of The Star, except for the stock pages.

Update 25th April 2020

Just my luck. The Edge Financial Daily has ceased publication since April 22nd, 2020. Last issue was on April 21st, 2020. I am back to square one.
